Mimi Brown of WDAS FM and the host of the Hip Hop Dance Party on the station posted rare footage of her former co-worker Dr. Perri Johnson as a host of the Astro Disc TV show from the 1970’s. Brown herself appears at the beginning of the Instagram post. Mind you Johnson hasn’t been on the radio in Philadelphia since the 1980’s, however he made a huge impact, helping to cement the legacy of the station. WDAS has been a part of radio scene in Philadelphia for over 70 years.
Also making an impact is Mimi Brown who has been on the air at the station since the late 70’s. She along with Johnson and others ushered in the urban contemporary sound in Philadelphia on FM radio in a similar fashion as Frankie Crocker did at WBLS in New York City. Johnson, however left radio, moved to California, earned his doctorate in Psychology (he became a real medical doctor), became a therapist and has authored books on the subject. Johnson also released a regional hit that featured his rap on a 12 inch version of Bohannon-Let’s Start II Dance Again.
