CD 101.9 is Back on the Air in New York City

That’s if you have an HD Radio… Smooth jazz is back on the air in New York City at 101.9 FM. The station is a side channel on the new 101.9 New Rock. Merlin Media dropped its “all news” presentation earlier this month and switched to a new alternative rock format on its main FM signal. Now it has decided to drop the country format on its HD2 channel and return to the smooth jazz format of “CD 101.9” WQCD. During its best ratings period in the 80’s and 90’s the music was simply referred to as “cool” with a … Continue reading CD 101.9 is Back on the Air in New York City

Radio vet Tom Kent is Excited About HD Radio; We’re Not

The sound quality might be amazing but where is the content to drive audiences to HD radio? When radio stations can provide interesting and compelling content on their HD2 and HD3 channels then maybe we’ll listen. Right now radio stations are competing against themselves through what you hear on your regular car radio, the radio you might have at home (which includes what is readily available on a mobile device app and over the internet), Sirius XM satellite radio and Pandora. HD Radio broadcasters are not even on the playing field. They’re still in the locker room. There’s really no reason … Continue reading Radio vet Tom Kent is Excited About HD Radio; We’re Not

>HD Radio – Do they really want you to listen to it?

>96.3 WHUR in Washington, D.C. broadcasts in HD. So that must mean they are a high definition radio station, right? What is HD Radio? (Hopefully you will know a little more after reading this post) The quality of the sound in HD is better…that’s a given. But the radio industry is marketing the HD Radio as a subscription free radio alternative with superior sound. However the programming on the side channels (HD2 or HD 3) is no where near the quality of Sirius XM Satellite radio. So why are they marketing themselves that way? Shouldn’t the emphasis be on sound quality? … Continue reading >HD Radio – Do they really want you to listen to it?

>The Best Commercial HD2 Station in the World is WHUR World

>It’s a wonder that more commercial stations don’t effectively program or promote their HD2 stations like WHUR in Washington, DC. It just seems that this HD radio thing can barely get off the ground for commercial radio stations. Terrestrial radio has left the door open for online music services like Pandora and Satellite radio to established themselves in the radio entertainment spectrum and fill a void where you would think HD2 stations could provide niche programming that would draw listeners away from their competitors. Just imagine how effective urban ac radio stations could be if they programmed stations like Sirius/XM … Continue reading >The Best Commercial HD2 Station in the World is WHUR World

CBS Radio Simulcast Sports Radio WFAN 660 to Florida

>Sounds like a great idea… During the New York Yankees baseball playoff run CBS Radio decided to place their New York City sports station “The Fan” 660 WFAN on CBS-owned radio stations in Tampa, Orlando and Palm Beach, Florida. Just imagine the delight of the transplanted New Yorkers, especially the retirees. Now even in a place like Atlanta, a town full of transplants, this may sound like a wonderful idea. As a matter of fact every Friday and Saturday night V-103’s live club broadcast is nothing but a live shout out session for Frank Ski, Bubby Love and the crew. … Continue reading CBS Radio Simulcast Sports Radio WFAN 660 to Florida

>"STUFF THAT’S NOT WORKING!" brought to you by the Radio Industry

>Do you have a HD radio? Do you even care about a HD Radio? The radio industry has done an incredibly poor job of marketing the “superior sound quality” of HD radio. First of all it’s too damn expensive. Second of all there isn’t any programming or content that’s makes it attractive enough to off set the cost of the radio. The latest gimmick is when an old format is killed off on a standard FM station, corporate programmers move the format to a HD channel. Some how they expect the disgruntled fans of the old format to run to … Continue reading >"STUFF THAT’S NOT WORKING!" brought to you by the Radio Industry
