94.7 The WAVE is now Smooth R&B

CBS Radio’s 94.7 The Wave in Los Angeles has transitioned from a smooth jazz outlet to an Urban Adult Contemporary station. For many years during the hey day of the smooth jazz format, “lite” R&B titles from the likes of Sade, Luther Vandross, and others were always a part of the song lists as it was with The Wave. But now The Wave has just about dropped all smooth jazz songs from their playlists and has incorporated an Urban AC format called “Smooth R&B.” The station will compete for listeners with 102.3 KJLH, which is owned by Stevie Wonder and … Continue reading 94.7 The WAVE is now Smooth R&B

102.3 KJLH’s Dominique DiPrima on Radio Row at Democratic National Convention

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– Dominique DiPrima has one of the most unusual shifts at one of the nation’s most unusual radio stations. The daily news, information, and talk program runs from 4:30 to 6 a.m., which she says is fantastic. “It’s rush hour,” DiPrima says from her broadcast booth at Time Warner Cable Arena. Her station is KJLH-FM and the city is Los Angeles. By the time “The Front Page With Dominique DiPrima” hits the air, the 405 freeway is already a river of brake lights. One of the things that makes KJLH unusual is that it has a mix of talk shows, … Continue reading 102.3 KJLH’s Dominique DiPrima on Radio Row at Democratic National Convention

>Steve Harvey Back on the Air in Los Angeles at Radio Free 102.3 KJLH

> Urban AC station KJLH has agreed to begin airing the syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show. Harvey has been off the air in Los Angeles since being dropped by Magic Broadcasting’s Urban station 93.5 The Beat KDAY a couple of months ago. KJLH has suffered greatly in terms of listenership and revenue under the PPM electronic ratings system. Steve Harvey will replace current radio vet and local host Guy Black, who came to L.A. from New York’s 107.5 WBLS midday slot. This is a big move for the station, as station owner Stevie Wonder vowed NEVER to go syndication. But … Continue reading >Steve Harvey Back on the Air in Los Angeles at Radio Free 102.3 KJLH

>KJLH Los Angeles – Another Urban PPM Horror Story

>“Radio Free” 102.3 KJLH Los Angeles blames the Arbitron PPM for part of its recent 37% fall-off in revenue and dip in ratings the station has suffered since the implementation of the PPM ratings system. KJLH general manager Karen Slade tells the L.A. Business Journal that there’s something wrong with falling from a diary-average 1.2-1.3 to a 0.4 in PPM. She says “We didn’t lose 100,000 listeners overnight. And when you tell me I’ve lost 70% of my market share, you’re putting me out of business.” Slade also says that PPM is forcing her to do more music and less … Continue reading >KJLH Los Angeles – Another Urban PPM Horror Story

>Dr. Boyce Watkins Slams D.L. Hughley’s new show

> My thoughts on ‘D.L. Hughley Breaks the News’: The first week wasn’t that good. D.L. seemed very nervous hosting the show and overall it wasn’t funny. I’m going to give the show another week to get it together. He may need a co-host because I think he does better playing off another person. I like on the edge comedy like Dave Chappelle but the first week wasn’t hitting it. Using Ashy Larry as Freddie Mac (Donnell Rawlings) from the Chappelle show was an OK attempt at being edgy, but D.L. needs to bring it on his next show. But … Continue reading >Dr. Boyce Watkins Slams D.L. Hughley’s new show
