>Amel Larrieux says “Independent Artists Of Color Are Too Under The Radar”

> The website Hello Beautiful recently interviewed soul songstress Amel Larrieux in New York City at a performance at the club S.O.B.’s. She, like many contemporary independent artists who sing the music that is unaffectionately known as Neo-Soul, doesn’t particularly like that label. We couldn’t agree with her, Corrine Bailey Rae, and others more. You might as well say Neo-Soul means no radio airplay. Amel also talks about her daughters joining her group and the upcoming reunion album for “Groove Theory” with Bryce Wilson. Has it really been 15 years since their hit “Tell Me”? >Performance Tax Opposed by Small Market Radio Stations

> Last week, Black broadcasters met in Washington, D.C. to discuss the possibility that a Performance Tax would cause them to go into bankruptcy. Now many small market broadcasters are facing the same dilemma, if the proposed tax is put into place by congress, you might see many stations simply go dark. Dilla & Baatin, now deceased, the group soldiered on with original member T3 continuing on with new member Elzhi. However it seems that it’s all come to a grinding halt with Hex Murda, Elzhi’s … Continue reading >Slum Village Calls It Quits

What is the Best Song this Summer and What does it take to make it?

The NPR radio program Planet Money takes a look at the secret battle that’s been going on for more than a year to create the song of the summer. It takes a lot of money, but even that does not guarantee success… Planet Money takes Rihanna’s “Man Down” as a case study that began in the spring of 2010, when Rihanna’s label flew in songwriters and producers from around the company for a “writing camp.” (They wrote the song in about 12 minutes) We can safely say the best song this summer is not Rihanna’s “Man Down” despite the heavy … Continue reading What is the Best Song this Summer and What does it take to make it?
