Howard University-owned WHUR-FM is adding a new, locally focused afternoon show to its line-up. “The Nina Brown and Joe Clair Afternoon Show” launches Tuesday, September 3rd at 3 p.m. starring DC’s own Comedian and Multimedia Host Joe Clair and Radio Personality and Television Actress Nina Brown. Together, the dynamic duo will serve up the happiest hours in DMV radio with creatively curated programming to meet the needs and interests of listeners.
“Joe and Nina epitomize the next chapter in WHUR’s unwavering commitment to serving the DMV community. Joe Clair, a cultural icon from his days on BET’s “Rap City” to his acclaimed stand-up comedy and now his show on Fox5, teams up with Nina Brown’s broadcasting talent, charisma, and passion. Together, they bring the perfect mix for radio success,” said WHUR Senior Director of Programming Al Payne.
“The Nina Brown and Joe Clair Afternoon Show” promises to enliven the afternoons of listeners with a unique blend of entertainment and community-oriented programming. With their combined expertise and energetic presence, the show is poised to become a go-to staple for listeners seeking both information and fun in their daily routine.
The addition of the “Nina Brown and Joe Clair Afternoon Show The Happiest Hours In DMV Radio” completes WHUR’s weekday line-up beginning with the “Steve Harvey Morning Show” at 6 a.m., “Sunni and the City” at 10 a.m., “The Daily Drum with Harold Fisher” at 7 p.m., and the ‘Original Quiet Storm” at 7:30 p.m.
WHUR taps another former WPGC host 95.5 with the hire of Joe Clair for afternoon drive. Middays are hosted by Sunni in the City. Both worked together on the morning show at WPGC and Sunni was also a midday host at the Hip Hop and R&B station.
Nina Brown recently exited the Frank Ski Show, which is syndicated to 20 markets across the country and is currently looking for a new co-host. Frank Ski himself and John Monds were let go at WHUR in early August, in what can sort of be called a "youth movement" although the official reason was due to budget cuts. At the time, there was speculation that Frank Ski would lose his syndicated show as well. But Oceanic Tradewinds and Compass Media are going forward with the show.
Frank and Nina were hosting mornings in Atlanta on Kiss 104.1 until October 2023 and afternoons at WHUR. Up until January 2024, Frank Ski did mornings solo in Atlanta. Same for Nina. She was also doing the show by herself at WHUR while Frank was on medical leave earlier this year. Nina was the producer for The Frank Ski and Wanda Show at V-103 in Atlanta going back to 2004. She was not an on-air talent and her first experience of being on the mic came at WHUR. They have a long history of working together.
Joe Clair previously worked with Frank Ski at WHUR until his hire for mornings at WPGC. Clair and Brown probably fit in better with the upper end of HUR's target audience (25-54). Those listeners who grew up with Hip Hop in the 90's watched Rap City on BET where "Joe Cleezy" was the mayor (host) of the show. Also the fact that Clair has a local presence on television and makes local appearances in the DMV through his comedy shows perhaps played a factor. Frank Ski is still based in Atlanta and did the show from his home studio.
It was also quite apparent that Frank's show was becoming more and more "syndicated" in its presentation to DMV listeners (syndication began in 2023) and the juggling act of trying to maintain the "local feel" was getting harder for the station that ...Sounds Like Washington to go with. The show's ratings were great, but obviously management felt it was time for a change. Frank Ski and Nina Brown joined WHUR in August 2020. Frank Ski previously hosted afternoons on HUR with Clair and Mo Ivory from 2013-15.
Although the show doesn't launch officially until Tuesday, September 3, Joe Clair was in-studio at WHUR with Nina Brown on Instagram and talked about the new show.
