Senate Votes to Strip $1.1 Billion From Public Broadcasting in Blow to PBS and NPR

Senate Votes to Strip $1.1 Billion From Public Broadcasting in Blow to PBS and NPR

The Senate voted early Thursday to strip $1.1 billion in funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a severe blow to 1,500 local public stations, as well as PBS and NPR.

Before the vote, Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Missouri, said that PBS and NPR had become “megaphones for partisan left-wing activism,” and that Republicans were seeking to stop wasteful spending.

The 51-to-48 vote caps a multi-decade push to defund public media by conservatives who argue that its programming is out of step with the national political environment. At a hearing in March, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene cited the appearance of a drag queen on “Let’s Learn,” a YouTube series produced by the WNET Group in New York.

Drawing on a 2024 Free Press article from former NPR editor Uri Berliner, Republicans also faulted NPR’s handling of the Hunter Biden laptop story and the COVID lab leak theory. They also objected to a documentary, “Racist Trees,” that aired on PBS.

Senate Votes to Strip $1.1 Billion From Public Broadcasting in Blow to PBS and NPR

END OF AN ERA 🏆 After seven beautiful, wild, growth-filled years, my time with TNT Sports and Bleacher Report is coming to an end — and where to begin…. Just look at all the fun we had. The questions. The viral clips. The moments that meant something. I loved looking back at all the conversations we created. The best times of my career. Clips that make people smile. The coworkers who turned into forever friends. I walked into this role as a 26 year old woman that had a lot to say and a lot to learn….

And the only reason I’m leaving as a better broadcaster is because of every single person I worked with in Atlanta and New York, on set, behind the camera, on the talent team, in the c suite, in the edit bays, in the trucks. Thank you for taking a chance on me. For believing there was space in sports media for me to do in-depth sit-downs. For never putting me in a box. For letting me grow, mess up, try new things — and do it all with support.
